Costa Rican Cabellero

After a month of total relaxation it’s time to leave Costa Rica. We’re leaving behind a beautiful country. The beaches, the sunsets, the tropical jungle, the friendly people. No more waking at 5am to Howler Monkeys or watching the flocks of colorful parrots flying from tree tops at sunset. So long to my morning swims, the cocktail party circuit, and the great friends that we hope to see again.

We’ve had a fantastic time here – spending our days on the beach in the sleepy fishing village of Garza and Nosara (Playa Guiones), two great beach communities that have managed to hold on to their integrity and have not given over to mass tourism. It’s a fragile balance but it seems to be working. Although the area seems small it has everything you need. There’s a world famous yoga institute, great restaurants, long sandy beaches with what Jeff calls the perfect “old man waves”. Spanish lessons, surf lessons, horseback riding…

We don’t have a lot to report about sights to see or activities we’ve done. Our time here was spent working on the house, taking walks, surfing (for Jeff), swimming and of course eating and drinking to much as usual.

We leave tomorrow for Peru. We’re leaving behind the humid jungle for the dry arid Andes. One thing I won’t miss, the bugs!

If Santa missed your house last night it might be because he ran off with Lila late last night after meeting her at the “DoIt Center” – seriously that’s what they call the big Home Depot type store in Liberia, Costa Rica.

Rodeo December 20, 2008: Nosara, Costa Rica

Growing up with the rodeo in Northern California, Lila and I thought that it would be fun to see what a Costa Rican rodeo might be like. Think high school football game mixed with a demolition derby, add a large quantity of cerveza and throw out any rule book that may have existed, and you’re close. The first shocking thing is the fact that when the bull riders are risking their lives atop one ton bulls, wrapped tightly around the groin with a very tight rope (the bulls not the riders), the crowd is allowed to jump down into the bull ring and actually participate. Being 20 years older than the average Costa Rican rodeo fan, Matt, Lila’s brother and my good friend, and I entered the ring, but kept a fair distance. Quite the spectacle, but we felt privileged to be able to participate in an authentic CR tradition.

In addition to the show, which also included a synchronized horse troop, dancing horses, and a juggling act, there was a multitude of tasty treats to sample.

Today, only three months behind schedule, Lila and I have decided it’s time to start a better work out regime. Over the next year we will be trekking, surfing, diving, and walking a hell of a lot. It’s time to get strong. To get us started we’ve decided to try the “one hundred push ups” training program. The basic idea is that if we follow this program for 6-weeks we will be able to do, if not 100 push ups, at least more than we can do now.

Lila stretches with the help of our TRX

Aside from the push ups, Lila and I have both been stretching and doing some strength training on the TRX (“Gym in a Bag”) that we have brought with us. To learn more about the TRX check out the Fitness Anywhere website. This may be a shameless plug for my friends at Fitness Anywhere, but I swear this thing is the real deal.
